How to get your restaurant or cafe found on Google

When someone is hungry and out, they do not open an app and scroll a marketplace. They google "brunch near me" or "best pasta in the area" and look at the map. If your venue is in that top group, with good photos and a stack of reviews, you get the table. If not, the place down the road does.

Step one: claim your Google Business Profile

Your free Google listing is the most important thing for a venue, more important than any marketplace app. It is what puts you on the map with your hours, photos, menu link, reviews and a way to book.

Go to google.com/business and claim or create your venue. Google will verify it is real. An unverified listing is one Google does not trust, so do not skip this.

Step two: make the listing irresistible

For food, the listing is a shopfront. Fill in everything, and make it look good enough to eat:

  • The right category. "Cafe," "Italian restaurant," "Brunch restaurant." Be specific, and add secondary categories that fit.
  • Photos, lots of them. This matters more for venues than almost any other business. Real photos of the food, the room and the coffee. People choose where to eat with their eyes.
  • Hours that are always right, including public holidays. Nothing kills trust like turning up to a "closed" sign when Google said open.
  • A menu link and a booking link. Make it one tap from finding you to seeing the menu and grabbing a table.

Step three: reviews are everything for food

People trust other diners more than any ad. A venue with 200 recent reviews at 4.6 stars beats a better kitchen with 12 reviews every single time. And reviews lift you up the local rankings.

  • No photos, or dark phone snaps. For food, weak photos are worse than none.
  • Letting reviews sit unanswered. A dead-looking listing slides down the rankings.
  • Living only inside a booking marketplace. You pay commission on diners who were already yours, and you rent the relationship.
